About Me
My name is Kay Linley and I am a multi-disciplinary artist based in the remote, northern community of Atlin, British Columbia, Canada. I am a painter, writer and textiles artist and naturalist at heart.
The surrounding wilderness of the Taku River Tlingit Traditional Territory drives and inspires my work. Being remote keeps me innovating and searching for natural and local sources for my creations.
My Story
I was born in Wakefield, England. My family immigrated to Canada in the late 1980's when I was just three and a half. My mother was an artist and writer and my dad was an innovative businessman. I started writing poetry when I was about six years old and started painting at about 11. I also did textiles when I was a kid, knitting myself blankets and weaving coasters. My childhood was difficult because my mother suffered from mental health issues and soon after moving to Canada my parents divorced. From the age of 19 onwards I chased jobs, mostly between BC and Alberta, and was on the move annually. While in Kimberley, BC, I met a Siberian husky by the name of Mya at the pound. It was love at first sight and her spirit inspired me to re-locate somewhere wilder and northern. We found our home together in Dawson City, Yukon starting in 2011. This is when I completed the fine arts program at the Yukon School of Visual Arts. After a spell away in Calgary to recover from a heart-break and complete my masters in policy, Mya and I returned to live in Dawson City until her untimely death in 2017. A new love struck shortly after her passing, of the human variety, and I decided to move to Atlin, British Columbia for him in 2021. I then completed a writing mentorship program with Humber College and wrote my "first" self-published book Paddling Back to Us. Between the mountains and lakes of Atlin, I delve deeper into my creative work. I am teaching myself how to weave and make natural dyes from the plants in the forest and my garden. I continue to write poetry as I wander the wild trails and hills in the most beautiful and wild region of this country. I am merging my artistic practices together on this website to share the many threads that make up my unique perspective. I am also sharing my work with you in hopes something strikes a cord deep within your heart and soul.
